O Burel

The Burel

Burel

Have a good weekend! In this week's article, We want to talk about burel. How is it made? What is its origin? What are its properties? We will answer these questions and more in the continuation. We will also present some of our products made from burel that we have for sale on our page. Stay with us!

The origin of burel dates back to the mountains of Serra da Estrela in the interior of Portugal; it is there where the roots, the knowledge of generations, the body, and the name are born. The sheep, which are the starting point, are also found in these mountains. Burel is a sustainable material; nothing is wasted, nothing is lost, everything is transformed; burel respects the nature that feeds it.

For the manufacture of burel, basically, black wool is used. The wool then goes through a process to undo the knots and untangle, then it is twisted and spun - these steps should be performed by the same person so that the thread always has the same thickness and texture. From the spindle, the wool goes through the operation of winding (making skeins). After being twisted, the wool is converted into threads and placed in the "pisão," a machine that beats and scalds the wool to make the fabric harder and tighter. The beaten webs are then delivered to the tailor who transforms them into burel clothing for the numerous days of rain, snow, and wind in the mountains.

Burel has numerous extremely valuable properties that give it superior utility. Chemically, the burel fabric is composed of Carbon (50%), Hydrogen (7%), Oxygen (21%), Nitrogen (17%), and Sulfur (5%). Its physical properties are as follows: fire resistance (certified by flammability tests), acoustic insulation, thermal insulation, hygroscopic properties, anti-static properties, abrasion resistance, and it does not create lint (unlike most fabrics). As you can see, burel is a natural product like few others!

In our store, you can find products made with this wonderful national product.
